This is a very good read. The concept of how an entire café goes back in time is a little confusing. that does not matter. You will forget that & get involved with the clearly developed characters. Some you will hate & others you will love. FINALLY, a book with a detailed good ending. Yea, for this author. He has a great imagination & wrote a great book. The Dinosaur Four eBook Geoff Jones Reviews
Fast paced. Good action scenes. Believable characters and interactions. Dinosaurs are well described. It's a fun read and I would recommend to any dinosaur or sci-if time travel fan.
Spoiler alert Some of the dinosaurs described here have not been found in Colorado so that's a stretch. No sauropods or pterosaurs in the North American Cretaceous period either. And unlikely the beak of a ceratopsian could cut a human in half.
My only other complaint was the item they carried for something like eight miles is supposed to weigh 40 pounds. I have to carry 50 pound fertilizer sacks on the farm. Not sure I could find four random people to share lugging that weight five miles without everyone collapsing. 20 pounds would be more reasonable and wouldn't change the story at all.
A fun read, quite an impressive debut for Mr. Jones. The dinosaur scenes are very well crafted (with one exception, see below) and the juxtaposition of the cafe and the Jurassic age is extremely believable (surprisingly) and fun. The scene with the tail (trying to avoid spoilers here)is fantastic. I felt some of the characters were really strong and compelling, although a few felt a little cliche or 2D.
I did have a problem with the few scenes where the POV shifts to one of the dinosaurs, kinda jarred me out of the story, and "pea brain" kept running through my head. The sci fi part (again trying to avoid spoilers) also seemed a little less believable than the dino part.
All and all enjoyable and I hope to see more from Mr. Jones.
PS--The new cover is much better!
It all happens so fast. Ten people in a coffee shop, going through their morning routine. Then a ticking sound. Tick. Tick. Tick. Tick. Tick.
And all of a sudden the group of strangers find themselves and the coffee shop at the end of the Cretaceous, on a prehistoric riverbank.
From there, author Geoff Jones puts his characters through the wringer, as they struggle to comprehend what happened to them and why, while dealing with injuries and dinosaur attacks.
First, there’s Edmontosaurus, a deadly herbivore that feels threatened by the newcomers encroaching on its territory. The group finally manages to scare away the herd by banging spoons and trays. Then there’s a T-rex, who is drawn to the scene by the loud noises, multiple angry Triceratops’, hungry pterosaurs, and a persistent Deinosuchus (a giant crocodile), just to name a few of the group’s obstacles.
Each quick chapter is told from a different character’s point of view, and there’s plenty of terror and gore. Everything is so fast paced, that each chapter feels really crammed full of information, about the characters and their backstories, the challenges they’re facing, and their plan for getting back home.
*Spoiler alert*
And yes, there is a way to get home, because it turns out the coffee shop was accidentally transported back in time by a group of scientists who work on the floor above the shop. Geoff gives clues throughout the story, and his characters slowly piece together what happened. It’s that age-old story of smart scientist gets government contract to build something cool, scientist gets arrogant and rushes the job, and scientist and his team suffer dire consequences from it.
The title of the book is a spoiler too, when you think about it. The book starts with ten people, and ends with four. However, Geoff has a great twist at the end—and it’s action-packed, of course.
The ten people who get transported are all very distinct and full of personality. There’s William, the level-headed mailman with two young sons who like dinosaurs—and the only one in the group who can name any of the dinosaurs they encounter.
There’s also Lisa, the brave owner of the coffee shop, and her employee Beth, Al, a man with a complicated past who has a crush on Lisa, and Tim, a loyal young man still figuring out how to make his own decisions. Others in the group include Hank and Callie, who are engaged though Callie is much younger than Hank, Patricia, the type-A personality who wants to be in charge, Helen, the elderly woman afraid of being left behind, and Morgan, the punk kid who provides comic relief.
Overall, The Dinosaur Four is a really enjoyable book, especially for dinosaur enthusiasts. As Geoff Jones puts it, the book is “an adult B-movie time-travel thriller.” And really, you can’t possibly go wrong with that.
I really enjoyed this this twist on reality! A strange ticking noise was heard and then a group of strangers (well not all of them) were transported back in time..along with the coffee shop they were in! Not only do they have to survive back when dinosaurs roamed the earth, they also had to figure out why they were there and how to get back to the future! The characters were awesome, I loved William..the Dad with 2 kids who loved dinosaurs, so he could tell the survivors some tips! Helen was amazing as well, an old lady pulls out a can of whupa$$ and actually survives up against many other younger people. There was a token "psycho", and some other great characters in the mix. The ending was sad but some people got theirs in the End! I just really think the author did a great job on the plot and creatively made the whole adventure seem plausible! It was fun and as a horror fan..gave me my dose of gore and terror!
This book took me back on an exciting adventure many many years ago when first diagnosed with a learning disability, dyslexia. A Catholic nun realized I was having difficulty learning to read. It was in the 50s and I was about seven years old. Mother Superior told my mother,"get her to read anything". Cereal boxes, the condiments on the table, comic books, etc. Mother took me to a Library & newsstand, and introduced me to books on dinosaurs. For every book I took out, she would reward me with a comic book of my choosing from the newsstand. Back then, I didn't know what was science fiction, vs. reality. To this day I am still stuck on dinosaurs. There are many in this book with vivid accounts of their appearance and behavior. To me, the people were secondary except for a protagonist and heroin or two. This was fun to read, and well written.
This is a very good read. The concept of how an entire café goes back in time is a little confusing. that does not matter. You will forget that & get involved with the clearly developed characters.
